Kinja'd!!!

The idea of this thread is simple: Post pictures of ingenious car mods you have done yourself to improve your car’ usefulness.

This does not include power mods (unless it’s really ingenious).

What I mean by ingenious (apparently my nomination for word of the day) is something, usually simple, that was done with no money or a small amount of money and is something (possibly) unique to your car.

Here’s mine:

Kinja'd!!!

I simply made the top of the ashtray into a lid concealing a small cubby hole where I can set my phone or whatnot. The only cost was that of the high temp sealant (left over from replacing the valve cover gasket) and the sticky pad I used as the bottom. The green block you see below was later attached to the lid as you can see above.

Kinja'd!!!

All pictures shown above are my own. Please ask permission before sharing.

So what about you oppo? Post some pictures and descriptions!

When I was seven years old I duct taped a plastic bowl to the handlebars of my scooter so I could have a supply of pretzels while I rode around in circles in the driveway.

Honda's cupholders SUCK, they are way to big for almost anything. So I have used adhesive foam tape to make things fit alittle more snug while also offering a bit of adjustablity.

Cheapest thing I did to my car to make it different.

One trip to the bar and got 4 large long bags to make it.

Bonus points for correctly identifying the car.

1 hint - The picture shows me from the drivers seat. You see the passenger seat behind the shifter.

I had a mk3 jetta that had some rust on the from fenders so I sanded it off and covered both fenders with beer labels. It was my anti sticker bomb - beerbombing. I painted the front bumper semigloss black with two rattle cans of rustoleum and put on a Euro front plate that said "bierwagen". Easiest way to make my front end look unique. The car got a host of other mods, but the beer bombing was unique and cheap. To my knowledge, I am the first person to do that on that level. I inspired a few other cars in the area with that crapcan too.

In one of my old Saturns the reverse light switch died. Being too cheap and lazy to fix it properly, I simply wired up a toggle switch to turn them on and off manually.

As a beneficial side effect, it was a great tailgater deterrent.

The stitching was done by a seamstress. I took it to the base alterations shop. With the falling apart stock one. She did it for 10 bucks. Took the stock one, cut the CR bags apart and made it fit.

No, it's not a Fit, nor is it a Honda. In Japanese, the number representation for the brand is 2 and 3.

Second hint - I have a post for Doug, where the entire car is shown in Wine Red.

It was an R32 Skyline that it was in.

When I decided the car was to die, I painted the hood black, and wrote stuff in Japanese on it. Only a few people understood what it meant.

Translated to English - I am a machine of war. I wage war where ever it is deemed necessary. Once war has begun, their can only be casualties. You can be one, or I could. Eventually, one shall be vanquished. Which do you prefer? An honorable death or a death by means which are unimaginable to either side. Choose wisely.

It was a quote I saw somewhere. I chose to let people think where it was about me or my car.

Eventually when the Skyline died and I bought a JZX90 Mark II. I transferred it over to the Mark II's trunk lid. After my deployment money was spent on the 90. Most people thought it was about the car.

The JZX90 was a true machine of war. Exhaust you could hear from 2-3 blocks away, constant noise tickets. Eventually banned from base and every weekend, Touge monster or track.

Alot of Japanese people on the mountain, loved it. I'd let anyone drive it. In many conversations one thing came up. The quote on the trunk. It fit that car.

Eventually the motor was yanked, the body was sold. The motor sat and was eventually parted out. If I couldn't take it with me, it couldn't go to anyone else. I sold it for about 1500 bucks less than I had it all of it.

I miss it. Which is why I've been saving since I got back to the US. I want another JZX90 Mark II. Slap Camry badges on it, roll up on idiots and ask them if they want some of my JDM Toyota Camry.

I rambled on, I'm already drinking on a Monday evening. Being your own boss is great.

It was a $200 dollar car, I drove and used old parts from friends on.

I was deploying and the inspection was due. It needed more work, than it was worth to keep around. I sold worthwhile parts off it to local people I knew and friends from Skyline Owners USA.

It died because it had probably 800 bucks in it, and needed 3200 bucks in work. Cracked windshield, leaky diff cover, bushings, axle boots and other stuff. It wasn't worth it to keep around. Made more money off parts and letting it die than to try to keep it.

Plus seeing 15 different Skylines on base got old. I had a Red one before other people. Then everyone got one. So it wasn't fun anymore. Getting blamed for stuff I wasn't doing just because it was a "red skyline".

I bought a car that was out of reach for most of the people in the dorms and those who modified them. Then it got to be the same again. So I made it so ridiculously different and my own, you knew if it was me or not.

Then left Japan for good. I miss my Skyline, my JZX90 and the car culture. I've been looking to go back, source the right car and get a few things and then bring it all back. When it's legal to do so, just like Doug. 2017 and beyond, Inline 6 VVTi Single turbo 4 door Supra. That looks close to a 97ish Camry.

nice, I don't see many red ones around here.

I read your other posts, I haven't driven a JZX90 but I've driven a JZX80 and JZX100, awesome cars. Same story as yours where not a whole lot of people outside the JDM scene know what they are. So my mates who owned them spent most weekends trolling Commodores and Falcons.

I'm not even sure if the JZX90's are complied for Australia, cause I can't even remember seeing one.

I'm US based. I lived in Japan, about an hour away from Tokyo. So being military, and in Japan.

All my Gran Turismo dreams were realities. Telling my US friends, I own a Skyline. Getting the "No fucking way" as a response.

Owned them and loved them. Became a Skyline expert in the year I owned one. Knew alot about them before even seeing a real one. Then owning it, made it easier to understand it.

I'd say I got more looks in my JZX90 than my skyline. The 90 was slowly becoming the new "it" car for VIP, drift. I bought wheels I was told that weren't going to fit. The size, offset and tire was to big for a lowered 90. Installed the fronts with a 10mm spacer. Rears got a 5mm to get them sitting just right. Then fold the rear wheel well lip to accomodate.

18x9 +10(including the spacer) 18x10 +5 on the rears. On stock fenders, with a bit of hammer and dolly work. 245's on the front, 265's on the rear. I had 150 bucks in wheels, tires and spacers. Thanks to Yahoo auctions Japan. Tires where 20 a pop for the front, 25 for the rears, 5 dollar spacers and 50 dollar wheels that needed a little bit of paint.

Kinja'd!!!

Japanese inspection couldn't say shit. MWAHAH, fit just fine.

This was my DD JZX90. I had a silver beast, and a green DD. Both were Tourer models. The Green one was an NA Tourer S. The silver, a Tourer V. Parts yanked off the silver one, went here. Sometimes I'd buy parts specifically for the green one.

Kinja'd!!!

As low as it could go with the wheels I had on it.

Kinja'd!!!

That nut was about a half a pack of playing cards from the inside side wall. On the right bump, it would rub. It only did it very lightly. You'd see it when the wheel was off.

The back wasn't much better.

it's a really pretty green. There's a dude at my work with a JZZ31 in the same green (6m2?) with the same wheels... though he's trying to find some BBS LM's for it.

looks great man, rubbing aside I think that's about as perfect a suspension and wheel setup as you can get. I'm not big on VIP or stance.

I think I've become an expert on Skylines just from all my mates owning them :P I've driven just about every trim level from R30 to R33. Even a slow as balls R32 GXi D: I have no idea why someone imported it, maybe they thought it was the RB20 model.

Yahoo japan is pretty awesome, I've snagged a good deal on some R32 GTR rims late last year. paid less than 1/4 what I would have paid locally for a set. I went via an importer who fills up containers of parts, you just point them at the right Yahoo japan auction and give them a max $$ figure and they'll do the rest.

Japan's probably the dream posting for US military right? no one to shoot at you and you get to drive cool cars.

Not bad at all, actually. I had several passengers comment that the cup holder looked sort of out-of-place, and it was odd that they'd have it installed there. So it looked stock as far as anyone could tell. I don't own the car anymore, though, so I can't take a picture of it.

I still think about what I did there, what I didn't do.

I loved Skylines, enjoyed it all while I was there. I'll always hold a special place in my heart, for a big girl with a tattoo on her firewall that begins with JZX.

She's took my heart at the first time I saw her. When I drove by, in my Skyline no doubt. She took my heart. From then on, I looked at everything. Then she was mine.

That car changed my mind on big sedans with a powerful motor. It really did. Now, I hop at the chance to drive a big, powerful executive type car. Just to compare it to the fond memories of my big girl with green hair.

My 90 I bring to the US, will be green. A 6N2 Dark Green Mica JZX90.

Oh well, I'll sell my truck, so my 90 would be my "toy".

Garage space can't handle everything thats in there.

1 extended cab truck, 3 motorcycles, lawn crap, boxes of junk in the rafters, an atv and a bike lift.

Heated and cooled depending on the weather. Best investment I made. Finishing the garage. Spray foam and drywall. Keeps it decent enough for work if you keep the doors closed.
Just move the stuff out on the driveway, let it sit and close the door, open the beers and get to work. Drink til you pass out or the work is done.

Yes it is a voodoo. I like it a lot... I went from the nardi evolution knob that was stock on my m and I like this better (a little better weight and feel). The only thing I will point out is that the brushed aluminum (i think that's what I have) gets pretty hot is the sun and cold in the winter, although it is only a minor inconvenience to me. I've heard the textured black is better in that respect; not sure about other kinds.

Inside Tokyo you'll find English here and there, and some who don't speak it.

Outside of Tokyo, near Ebisu. I found broken English and sign language that'll cover the jist of tthe conversation.

Just depends, being nice and polite will get you far. Being an idiot will get you nowhere. The farther you are from a big city, the English is too. Easiest thing to remember.

Younger people learn it in school, older people had a course to learn it.

The malls play dirty versions of songs, and most people don't understand the words but speaking English will make you laugh when you hear some song in the mall saying, n word this and that. Or along those lines.

Thanks for the compliment! I'm going to head to autozone to grab one of those sticky pads ASAP. The boot was quite easy to make, I used 3 sunglasses bags from 3 Maui Jim sunglasses that broke and were sent back on warranty (all replaced! props to Maui Jim). I just cut the bags into squares, turned the ratty stock boot inside out, and used the stock boot as a template. I'll admit, I had someone else who is competent with a machine do the sewing. But I do know that the trick is to do all the stitching with the boot inside-out so the seams look nice. After that, all I had to do was cut some holes and do a bit of ghetto-taping to keep the boot secured to the console along the edges.

That sticker actually isn't there on a stock NA. It's a little "JDM" (ugh... I like to just say "Japanese") touch. Shift pattern stickers on the console are (or were) mandated by law in Japan, whether the pattern was on the knob or not. You can get a sticker from Rosenthal Mazda for like $2 (they are great for OEM mail order in the Northeast), so I figured what the heck. I think it looks cool.

And yeah, Flyin miata is a great company. If I were to get new suspension it'd be from them. I got the whole set of pedals, but I was having a hell of a time trying to drill into the pedals (broke a few drill bits) and just gave up on it. The pedal extender on the other hand is just bolt on. Haven't been to their website in a bit though, is it not working?

They just did a redesign of the storefront portion of the site, and I think they have yet to list all of their products. I have a set of Flyin' Miata springs front and rear with KYB AGX shocks. I got the springs used and got a great deal on the shocks, which are similar to the Tokico shocks that come with FM's kit. It's a very nice setup, lowers the car just enough. I have no doubt that I'll be doing back to FM for a set of coil-overs.

haha yeah I think you will win that bet! Maybe I should have joined the military... Wouldn't have minded spending some time in a beautiful country like Japan not spending much of anything all the while.

Go for it! My mild suspension upgrades and a roll bar were my first mods, and now I can't stop! They're such fun cars, and fun to modify too.

If I could go back, I'd do coil-overs. a set of Tein Streets or a used set of Tein Mono coils will end up costing about the same as a set of new shocks & springs.

That was nice being able to see another country without the hotel bills.

Plus having a vehicle to go from one place to another made it easier. Knowing I'm not held down to a bus or a subway schedule. It helped.

I was talking to him last night about my trip itinerary and he's been planning one. He has some stuff on his list, I'vebeen too or already done. But Iit's still worth it to do it again

Yeah the stereo lights up green. There's also a sick feature where you can turn the lights off completely by the press of a button... I call it race mode lol. Why do you ask?

That's what I have! Although I'm sure you noticed lol. Maybe you could just replace a fuse? The only issue I've had is with the volume not being at all cooperative.

oh and does your center console have a gear layout sticker to the right of the gear shift like mine in the picture? Someone on here told me it was jdm and must have been added aftermarket. Just curious if it was standard on our Ms

When I got my car tuned, I got a couple of free stickers to go with the car. I stuck one on the silver trim on the dash. I think it really makes the car *pop* on the inside more!

Kinja'd!!!

Another one is a bit more clever. I found some old dip dishes in my kitchen, and it turns out they fit perfectly in my cupholder! now any time I go somewhere and I might need loose change for any reason, I just pop it in there!

Hispanic, actually ;)

It's a 2012 VW Jetta GLI, so it's 90% autobahn stormer, but since my GLi is Puebla built, and isn't sold in Europe, that's why it ain't a full on german ride!

Ha that's pretty funny... My first car was a golf... Not a bad car, but parts were expensive!
